Hey! I got some very cool news! Especially for those of us who attended the European broadcast of "Live and Alone - The Movie" in May 2003. And if you don't know what I'm talking about and want to check out the broadcast, you can click here ;-)
The book "Beaming David Bowie" will hit book shelves on August 15, 2005. It will also be available through online retailers such as Amazon UK from this date as well as being available to order online from www.beamingdavidbowie.com.
If you are wondering why Melissa fans should care ;-) please read the e-mail I received from Marc John. I certainly remember Melissa telling us at the broadcast how we were making a little history that day, since it was the first time a film had been premiered via satellite in cinemas:
Hi
there
I thought you might be interested to let Melissa's fans know
about a new book called "Beaming David Bowie", which is
primarily about the groundbreaking, global gig that Bowie
did in Sept 03, which was beamed live via satellite to cinemas
worldwide - for the first time ever. But -- five months before
Bowie did it Melissa Etheridge was a key trailblazer, when
her DVD "Live and Alone" was broadcast from LA to cinemas
in Germany and a radio station studio audience in Holland.
This included a live Q&A between Melissa in LA and the
cinema audiences in Europe. It was a big success, proving
the concept of "digital cinema" and paved the way for Sony
Music to greenlight the idea for Bowie on a global scale.
In my book (I was the cinema & technical coordinator for
both the Melissa and Bowie shows) I recount the experience
with Melissa, and I'm sure many of her fans will remember
the night (especially those who were there.)
Are you happy to run a news piece announcing the book?
It is fitting that Melissa gets some credit for playing such a
vital role, not least because digital cinema is revolutionising
cinema programming to include live music relays, and she
was the first female artist to pioneer the concept in Europe.
I'd be pleased to have your interest and look forward to
hearing back from you.
Sincerely,
Marc John
