On 18 March, 2006, Melissa was inducted into the Kansas City Music Hall of Fame.  Melissa was not able to attend, but her friend, Janas Gasbarre, was there to represent her.  Thank you to ksrocker for sharing her speech:

"I am Laura Janas Gasbarre, a high school classmate and friend of Melissa's who unfortunately could not be here with us this evening and sends her regrets. My presence here this evening speaks volumes to the love and deep roots Melissa Etheridge has for her hometown of Leavenworth and the great state of Kansas. Beginning June 17 in Las Vegas after an eventful two year hiatus from touring Melissa Etheridge will begin a 40-city trek that will wind throughout the U.S. and Canada. Melissa is going back where she belongs: on stage! She is returning happy, healthy and ready to ROCK! You can bet that wherever she goes, wherever she performs, she always takes a piece of Kansas with her and with that she is proud and honored to receive this award from the Kansas Music Hall of Fame."
