Like the Way I Do
Keep It Precious
i realize that i still haven't posted a Lowell 3 review but work has
been absolutely nutty since i've been back. i also didn't want to
leave my furry son by himself for too long.
for these last few shows, check out my schedule: i flew to Denver on
Friday afternoon after working a few hours in the morning, flew back
Saturday morning, went back to work Saturday afternoon into the
night, did some laundry, packed for Albuquerque, gave my kitten some
attention and walked one of my attys through a task on a long
distance call from Vienna (i made her call me <g>) before driving to
Oakland airport for my morning flight to Albuquerque. i flew back
home on Monday morning and went back to work Monday all day and
Tuesday morning before i took off for a little vacation time for the
final 2 shows in Phoenix and LA. whew!
needless to say, i'm a wee bit tired right now...<g>
hard to believe but we are down to the last 4 shows now. after the
heat of New England, Denver was relatively cool and breezy. Jib and
i ran into our buddies Mare and Pam before the show. Mare was down
to her last 2 shows (Denver and Albuquerque), while Denver would be
Pam's last show. they had pit seats, those lucky dogs. we chatted
for a bit about our pit assault strategy and then they headed off to
their seats.
the lecture hall was a rather large venue. sadly, a good portion of
the upper sections and some of the side middle level sections were
not sold out. when we picked up our MEIN tix, i noticed that the $35
priced tix were crossed out. i'm not sure if that meant they were
sold out or had decided not to sell any more of them.
originally, there was supposed to be a Denver travel package but i
think it was cancelled. i thought that boded well for our draw in
the MEIN allocation, but Jib's tix ended up in the center section,
row 4, which was the last row of the fan club allocation according to
the information i posted when the show first went on sale. Jib's got
approximately the same seniority as i do so i'm not sure what
happened there - were there really that many people who had more than
10 years membership in the fan club ahead of us? it seemed odd.
we did attempt to "self-upgrade" by standing in front of some 1st row
orchestra aisle seats as the show started, but the owners of those
seats showed up about 2 minutes into Come On Out Tonight, so we
headed to our seats 3 rows back.
the Denver crowd was really into the show, though, at least in the
lower orchestra and pit section. the lecture hall stage was
approximately waist high, which made the show a bit more intimate.
MLE was in a good mood and mentioned how they were nearing the end of
the tour. "Who knows what might happen?", she grinned.
for the "let me in" portion of IWTCO when MLE pauses as the audience
cheers, she raised and lowered her arms directing us to cheer louder
or softer depending on the position of her hands. she did this a few
times before restarting the song. what a hoot! MLE thanked us for
our participation and joked about how they just might end up in the
street with the audience following along. sounded good to me! <g>
Philip's solo during My Lover never ceases to dazzle me. he's just
so bloody talented. he pulls his soulful solos out of thin air just
so effortlessly. plus he was wearing my favorite black shirt so it
made my night. ;-)
MLE praised Denver and Colorado for their environmental stand. she
said that her hotel had recycling bins as did backstage. i noticed
that Denver's light rail were hybrids of some sort - very cool.
i tried to call Angie so she coud hear How Would I Know but my cell
signal was so nonexistent that i just kept my phone turned off.
a running theme during the show was the rivalry between the Kansas
City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. MLE mentioned football often
including how lucky she is to have someone who actually *lets* her
watch football. uh, ouch! LOL...
rather than make the instruments auction announcement after the
acoustic song, MLE talked about it as she was still playing CPH. she
said that her guitar was up for auction now, and with a mischievous
grin, she raised the guitar to her lips and planted a kiss on the
guitar's body. she said that the auction of Fritz's drum kit would
be ending soon adding that she kissed it all the time! LOL...
a interesting tidbit about CPH....i don't know if she was prompted by
a riff by Philip, but as they were playing the song, MLE sang "Fire"
by The Ohio Players. it was only just the "Fire" portion but it was
instantly recognizable.
about 2/3 way through This Is Not Goodbye, i noticed that the
security guard at the stage moved his chair. a bit of bustling with
security ensued, and then a woman in a wheelchair was wheeled down to
the stage. as soon as the song ended, i made my way down our row and
down the aisle towards the pit with Jib close behind. on my way down
the aisle, i tugged on TeaRose's partner's (Lisa) shirt sleeve to
come with us and pretty soon we had a good gang of fans in the pit as
MLE performed I Run for Life.
initially, i was standing to the right of the woman in the wheel
chair with the security guard between me and the stage. when he
moved to go deal with some fans in the front row, i stepped forward
against the stage. i shook the hand of the wheelchair woman who was
really happy to be up there, too. i separately waved to MLE and
Fritz, who responded with smiles of recognition and nods. i later
waved to Philip and Mark, too.
for a few minutes, i lost Jib. i thought she was behind me but
located her 3 people to my right against the stage with a big old
happy grin on her face. i leaned over the stage to see if i could
spot Mare to my left. at first, i couldn't find her but then i
noticed her leaning against one of the stage monitors. i caught her
attention and we waved to each other across the stage.
while it's awesome being against the stage soaking in all that
rocking energy from MLE and the band, it was really tough to hear
MLE's vocals all that clearly especially when she was talking. i
joked that it was similiar to how Charlie Brown's parents sound on
the Peanuts cartoons: "wah, wah, wah." LOL...
MLE inserted a bit of The Troggs' Wild Thing into Kiss Me again. i
just love it...
for his band intro BMSW solo, Philip played a couple of Pink Floyd
chords from a song that i can't recall right now. at first, i
recognized them but couldn't place the artist....then it struck me -
Floyd! later, Jib told me that MLE turned toward Mark who
mouthed, "Pink Floyd," back to her. LOL...
for the ending of Piece of My Heart, MLE directed the screams of the
audience again just as she had for IWTCO by raising and lowering her
arms. we followed directions well. ;-)
during Keep It Precious, MLE messed up the lines just before
the "holding you tight with wide open arms" line standing right in
front of me. she cracked up and i grabbed my face in my hands and
laughed along. she did resume singing the verse including
the "holding you tight" line. a little later in the song, MLE came
back over to me and we sang the lines "So take care, my love, my
friend / keep it precious" to each other as i grinned madly and gave
her 2 thumbs up. very cool. :-) an unknown person clapped me on
the shoulder for that exchange.
as i was located on Fritz's side, we had lots of eye contact and
smiles. he looks like he's having the time of his life up there;
he's always grinning and so happy to be playing with MLE. BTW, i
meant to mention this in one of my previous reviews but has anyone
noticed the design on Fritz's bass drum? there are these 2 blobs
labeled "A" and "B". at first, i thought they were just dividing
cells which i thought was odd. then it struck me - it's the twins!
isn't that how twins are identified on ultrasounds, too?
as MLE made her way down the front of the stage to shake hands after
KIP, she stopped in front of the wheelchair woman and dug in her
jeans pocket for a pick. she placed it in the woman's hand who just
glowed with happiness.
after the band finished up the song, Fritz came over and handed a
drumstick to me and then gave one to the wheelchair woman. she
definitely scored that night! i thanked Fritz and told him i'd see
him on Sunday night in Albuquerque.
after the show, Jib and i met up with Mare and Pam and had a drink
(or 2 <g>) at our hotel before calling it a night.
onto Albuquerque...only 3 more shows to go.
